Chinese manufacturer Xiaomi announced that ia new smartphone coming later this year called the Xiaomi M1. It’s one of the more elusive Android phones out there, sporting a custom MIUI interface on a shell that looks eerily similar to Apple’s own iPhone. Reports have it that the M1 or Xiaomi phone will be driven by a faster processor than previously rumored and might also be sold at a lower price. Preorders start on August 29 and it will be available in retail this October.
The company announced that it will be packing a 1.5GHz Qualcomm MSM8260 SoC and the previously announced 1.2GHz dual core will still be available and at a lower price, so that should please a lot of people looking out for this phone. Included as well is an Adreno 220 graphics chipset, 1GB RAM and a surprising 4GB ROM.
And if that isn’t enough to whet your appetite, its battery is a hefty 1930mAh and CEO Lei Jun even confirmed that it does two days worth of real life usage before it dies. While real life might be subject to interpretation, it probably means a few minutes of calls a day, light web surfing, an hour of gaming or two and a not insignificant amount of social networking.
The new Chinese superphone also has a 4-inch Sharp LCD, a custom Mi key for easy access to camera and messaging and a 8MP camera. These all come at a small price though as it’s 149g, but the heft will be reassuring to many users accustomed to HTC devices and iPhones. And for the fashion conscious, multicolored cases and batteries to match your favorite outfit.
MIUI itself is based on Android 2.3.5, its latest Gingerbread version. You’re not chained to it though as you are free as a Nexus to flash it with whatever flavor of Android you wish (no bootloaders here!) If you’re still doubtful, the M1 had been tested and tested in Xiaomi’s labs which might explain why it took so long to bring to market.
Most importantly is the price: US$310. I have high hopes for this phone and we’ll see how well it does when it becomes available in stores.
